Deep Roots—Second Look: Express Yourself Workshop10am

Get ready for an exceptional weekend of music and activities at the Deep Roots Music Festival

10:00am Second Look: Express Yourself, Check Yourself in partnership with Annapolis Valley Pride.

For all identities, abilities and experiences, aged 12 and up.

This all-ages, all-genders workshop invites you into a playful, welcoming space for exploration, self-celebration, and community learning. Explore self-expression through make-up, costumes and clothing, hair and wigs, hats and accessories. Whether you're experimenting with drag, character, gender, cosplay, or simply exploring new sides of yourself, Second Look offers tools to help you transform - and reflect. Together, we’ll celebrate creativity while also taking a moment to look deeper:

· What’s empowering - and what’s problematic - in how we dress up or perform?
· How do we explore freely without crossing into cultural appropriation or stereotyping?
· How can we express ourselves in ways that are both bold and respectful?
· How do you be your TRUE SELF but still read the room?
Facilitated by members of the local Pride community, this workshop combines tips, tools, and a collaborative approach with open-hearted learning.

All are welcome.

Described by Roots Music Canada as “The Pink Floyd of Folk Music” the Red Dirt Skinners are the multi-award winning, multi-instrumentalist husband and wife team of Rob and Sarah Skinner.

The Skinners’ current album, Bear With Us, was listed in the highly regarded International Magazine, Music News, as one of their top 20 albums of 2021 – alongside Adele, Taylor Swift and Paul Weller to name but a few.

Letters From Home- 7:30pm

Letters From Home- 7:30pm

Written and performed by Paula Rockwell, Letters From Home is an autobiographical journey through letters, stories, songs and photos from four generations of women.

I have packages of letters written from the time my maternal grandmother set sail from Liverpool, England in 1935, until her mother, my great grandmother, died in December 1961. It happens to coincide with my fascination for the music of this period, the music I teach regularly with my university students, and the music I research and get excited about. It is also the music, while I developed this show, that illuminates segments of the letters and this period of my family’s history. These letters are a universal connection about the everyday life of women during this time; her preoccupations with her love of family, love of home, love of husband, loss of her parents and, loss of children by moving away. Many women today can relate to this, on some level, by experiencing the same preoccupation. The letters are illuminated, and gaps will be filled in by songs I have created based on material I have discovered in the letters.
I am interested in forms of communication and the emotional value that is carried in the voice, both in speech and song, and the historic values of ideas when they are carried in cursive writing. I have written a script incorporating these letters, which will tell the story of these two amazing women, one of whom, I never had the pleasure to meet. The use of personal archival projected photos and original songs, as well as historical songs, help evoke a time that has passed.
