Art House Theatre Day is July 24

A Celebration of Scrappy, Independent Cinema

We’re thrilled to share the return of Art House Theater Day to Wolfville on Thursday, July 24th. For one day only, our beloved Al Whittle Theatre will join independent cinemas all over North America in celebrating the art house community and its commitment to preserving the power of cinematic storytelling.

This year, we’re proud to present Tangerine – a raw film that broke the rules and redefined independent filmmaking, marking its 10th anniversary. Tangerine tells the story of a heartbroken woman tearing through subcultures of Los Angeles to track down her disloyal boyfriend. Shot entirely on iPhones and with a shoestring budget, it’s a story told with heart and grit. To make this screening even more special, it will feature an exclusive recorded Q&A with Tangerine’s director, Sean Baker, now Academy Award-winning filmmaker known for Anora

There’s a special sort of magic that happens when you enter a darkened theatre side-by-side your community to witness bold, uncompromising stories that implore you to see beyond your perspective. This is the essence of Art House Theater Day, an annual program of Art House Convergence that brings audiences together to celebrate all that art house theaters - and independent film - contribute to our cultural landscape: ambitious and innovative art that provokes, challenges, entertains, and inspires. 2025 marks the sixth Art House Theater Day, which launched in 2016 in more than 150 cinemas across the country.

Our little theatre has its own scrappy charm. Volunteer-run and community-supported, “The Whittle” has long been a haven for film lovers who believe that cinema should be accessible, diverse, and deeply human. Just like Tangerine, which was brought to life with passion and DIY spirit, our theatre thrives thanks to the people who keep showing up—not just to watch, but to be part of something bigger.

We hope you will join us on Thursday, July 24th. Whether you're a longtime supporter of indie film or curious to experience something new.  Art House Theater Day promises an unforgettable evening that celebrates the creativity, resilience, and rebellious joy of independent cinema. Tickets are available now at alwhittletheatre.ca/events/tangerine.
